The Texas Thoroughbred Association named Skip and Go, a winner of two stakes races at Sunland Park in 2005, the Texas horse of the year for last season.

As a four-year-old in 2005, Skip and Go won the Winsham Lad Handicap and the Curribot Handicap at Sunland Park. The son of Skip Away also placed in five other stakes as he earned $154,844 for owner Wafer Thoroughbred Ranch.

Bred by Stonerside Stable, Skip and Go is out of the Senor Pete mare Golead (Arg), who earned Texas broodmare of the year honors. He also earned champion older male honors.

Skipaslew, a feisty son of Skip Away, and jockey Eric Saint-Martin scored a workmanlike victory in the Golden Gate Derby (G3) at Golden Gate Fields, leading his owner, game show creator Merv Griffin, to announce the horse was officially on the road to the Kentucky Derby (G1). Although he won his previous start in the Gold Rush Stakes there in mid-December despite some erratic behavior in the stretch, even-money favorite Skipaslew was all business in the Golden Gate Derby as he rated just off a comfortable pace before launching a bid three wide on the second turn to take command.
